On Predestination and Josh Hamilton

Exciting day, no?!  The General Manager Meetings are starting tomorrow in Southern California and while nothing really ever happens at the GM Meetings it’s still an offseason highlight, because it’s baseball related, you know.  And there’s not enough of that right now.

What?  There was an election?  Oh.  That’s kind of exciting, I guess.  Not nearly as exciting as the GM Meetings, though.  It’s pretty much party time if you are a) a GM b) a blogger who likes GMs (that is, yours truly – I’m sorta of the only one).  I have no idea what Sabean is up to these days, but I figure he’ll probably be very prominently wearing his World Series ring from 2010, because he doesn’t get that many opportunities to show that to Jon Daniels, right?

In Jon Daniels news, he announced that Alexi Ogando is going to be back in the rotation next year which I wholeheartedly agree with.  Now if he would just hurry up and run for president with Yu Darvish as his VP, there would be magic sparkles and candy for all.  Only partially kidding.

I don’t except we’ll hear any substantial Josh Hamilton news for a good long while, but it’s sure to be one of the big ones on the rumor mill this week and going forward.  I mean, hasn’t it been the biggest one on the rumor mill since, like, July?  I remember perfectly legitimate baseball sites putting out stories that he was coming to the Giants this past summer, which kind of freaked me out because if that was preordained all those months ago, then I seriously doubt I have any say in what I wear tomorrow.  There’s logic in there somewhere.

Anyhow, I have broccoli and guacamole to attend to so there is nothing keeping me here.  Catch you all later.

Yes, We Cain

My antlers are sad.  So am I.  The Rangers were eliminated from the postseason last night and I still haven’t taken the antlers off.  I think I have to wear them all postseason.  It feels a little bit unreal, right now – Yu Darvish spoke for all of us when he said he didn’t know what he was supposed to do tomorrow – but the Rangers have gone to the World Series two years in a row, so I guess I can’t get greedy.  I’m expecting some changes over the offseason, although I don’t think it’s their front office’s style to go all overhaul on us, like some people are calling for.  The biggest story, of course, will be Josh Hamilton, but I think they’re still a good team, a very good team, and what happened was some bad luck.  And some bad playoff format.

Angry in antlers.  I do not like this one-game playoff devilry.  In other news, is my eyebrow raise not completely awesome?

Of course, there’s still a lot to be excited about.  I’ve decided that the Tigers will be my poison-of-choice for the American League this season and they’re leading the A’s 3-1 in Detroit right now.  Giants-Tigers?  I could see that.

The NLDS gets going in just over an hour in San Francisco – don’t even get me started on the start time – and the familiar playoff nerves are starting to kick in for me.  Matt Cain is on the mound though, and there is no one else I’d rather have starting our first playoff game.

Yes, we most certainly Cain.

Let Them Eat Tim Lincecum Cake

I posted that photo of the Tim Lincecum cake I made while back on Twitter today that reminded me that I’d meant to post a recipe.  Truth is, you can make it with any cake in a round pan and pretty much any frosting, as long as it’s thick and has a good hold for all the jazz you’re going to put on top of it.  Personally, I adore carrot cake (not the grating-the-carrots part, but the rest of it), so that’s what this cake was.  And since the recipe I use is basically the greatest thing since Oh, Inverted World met the world, I’m going to include it here.

Carrot Cake

You will need:

  • 1 1/3 of a cup of vegetable oil
  • 2 cups of all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon of cinnamon
  • ½ teaspoon of all-spice
  • 2 teaspoons of baking powder
  • 2 cups of granulated sugar
  • 4 eggs at room temperature, lightly beaten
  • 4 cups of grated carrots (about 4 carrots)
  • Grated zest of 1 orange
  • 1 cup of coarsely chopped, toasted walnuts (optional)

To make:

Preheat your oven to 350℉.  Pour a bit of melted butter into a round cake pan and line with wax paper.

Combine flour, baking powder, salt, cinnamon and all-spice thoroughly.  Set aside.  In a medium bowl, cream sugar and oil.  Mix well.  Add egg mixture.  Slowly fold in the dry ingredients.  Once it is smooth, add carrots, orange zest and walnuts.  Spread evenly into the cake pan and bake until golden brown and firm, about 25-30 minutes.  A skewer should come out clean.  Transfer pan to wire rack to cool completely before frosting.

Cream Cheese Frosting

You will need:

  • 1 stick of butter (1/2 cup), soft
  • 1 pound of cream cheese
  • 1 ½ cups of powdered sugar
  • 1 teaspoon of vanilla extract

To make:

Beat cream cheese and butter in a medium bowl until smooth and creamy.  Slowly add powdered sugar and vanilla.  Beat for about 4 more minutes, until smooth and fluffy.

I made Timmy’s face orange, in honor of them Giants, even though he really has the skin-tone of a vampire.  Creative license, guys!  You can experiment with yellow and red food coloring until you get the shade you want.  Add to the frosting and incorporate it well.  Using a flat, metal spatula, frost the cake, getting it as smooth on the top as you can.  From here, you can do absolutely anything!  I used black licorice for Timmy’s hair, red jelly beans for his mouth, a walnut for his nose, green lifesavers and chocolate chips for his eyes.  To make the eyebrows, I cut two pieces of black licorice in half the long way, so as not to give him the David-Wright-eyebrow look.

Then prop a Giants cap up on top of it and enjoy!

See?  Not so hard.  And it’s probably a good idea to make it right about now, because otherwise you may spontaneously combust from rage about those Braves-Cardinals umps.

Let’s do this thing, Texas!  Antlers on.  Ready to go.  I may have to make a Yu Darvish cake for Yu.  I mean you.

Happy Birthday to Yu!

Happy Birthday to Yu Darvish (Who Is the Best)! In groundbreaking news, he cut and darkened the color of his hair last week and then promptly pitched a fantastic game against Detroit on Sunday. I don’t know if he’s taken advantage of my convenient guide to Dallas yet, but if not, now would be a good moment.

New hair, guys!  Maybe not as groundbreaking as Miley Cyrus meets little-kid-with-scissors-in-hand but still pretty exciting, if you ask me.

We love you, Yu.  We have also heard rumors that you speak perfectly good English and are just pulling all of our legs by using a translator.  In which case we think you should stop that, pronto.  Still, we love Yu.  You.  You know.
