This is for you, Eugenio (and a little bit for you, Executive of the Year) and Why Dave Groeschner is Due for a Mohawk

So this post was going to be for Eugenio Velez and then I read that Jon Daniels was named Executive of the Year by Baseball America and so I had to mention that first and foremost.  Congratulations to Jon and the whole Rangers organization.  Very much deserved.  It’s Time, and all that.

Anyway.  I miss Eugenio already.  Which is weird, because he hardly played last year, but I still miss him, you know, being there.  I know there is still the possibility that the Giants will sign him to a minor league contract, but I doubt that will happen.  At first I was very sad to hear they had non-tendered him but I’m trying to look at a bright side.  Hopefully he will find an organization that does need and want him now and has room for him in the majors.  I think if someone puts some confidence in him and gives him a real chance he will be a strong MLBer.  (Don’t breathe a word about his bunt attempts.  Seriously.  Don’t.)  And I do have a few teams on my wish list of who signs him.  Ahem, Doug Melvin or Jon Daniels?  Y’all should sign Eugenio Velez.  To see him in Brewer Blue or Ranger Red would make me very happy.

Meanwhile the Giants did tender Andres Torres, Jonathan Sanchez, Cody Ross, Javier Lopez, Ramon Ramirez and Santiago Casilla.  Ray and Velez are the two who were not tendered.  Both Burrell and Fontenot were signed to one year, one million dollar deals.  It looks to me (and probably to everyone else on the face of this beautiful planet) like Sabean is trying to re-sign everyone and keep the idea the same.  The problem I see with that, as I’ve written about before, is they’re not misfits anymore.  They’re players who won the World Series and are earning some nice money now.  Will it work again?

Then again, there might be some big moves still ahead for the Giants.  Sabean tends to surprise us like that.  So you know when we’ll find out?  Yeah, you guessed it.  The Winter Meetings.  Three days.  I am still giddily excited.  Stay tuned.

And it’s Day 8 and the snowflake earrings are still in my ears, in case you were wondering.

p.s.  Dave Groeschner is due for a mohawk.  In the Inside the Clbhouse:  Hitters from January, he tells Pablo that if they go to the World Series, he’ll get one.  They went to the World Series.  Heck, they won the World Series.  He totally needs to get one now.

Day One in Snowflake Earrings Retrospective: Black Friday Wishlist filled with Rangers Toaster, “Don’t Ask Me, Ask Barry” Tees and More

I am in a good mood today.  It’s Day One in snowflake earrings.  I have these snowflake earrings I adore, but I only wear them from the day after Thanksgiving ’til the beginning or March or so.  I am savoring every day.

So here I am, sitting with my laptop  checking store websites to see if there are any good deals.  So far: nothing.  Nothing that incites me to scream and click “checkout”.  Not even anything that incites me to scream under my breath.  I am disappointed in Black Friday.  It strikes me as a bit like Body Scanner Opt-Out Day… way media hyped and not really that huge a deal.  Correct me if I’m wrong, Black Friday-ers!

Anyway, just because I’m not buying doesn’t mean I’m not oogling some stuff.  So I decided to make my holiday wish list.  Baseball themed holiday wish list, that is.  I’m telling the people in my life to buy me silly things like an Evenstar necklace pendant and a Sephora 30 color eye-shadow palette.  But this list is just a lot of things I don’t need (I do need an Evenstar pendant, you know) but think are adorable and worth staring at for a few minutes.  And a few things I think are too funny not to share.

(I would also like to note that I currently have a Cubs Christmas tree ornament.  It’s a little snowman, with a Cubs logo on his front, came straight from Chicago.  Very sweet, but I’m not a Cubs fan.  So it’s on my dresser.  Sort of hidden.)

The Good

Texas Rangers L-O-V-E T-shirt by Majestic Athletic

$21.99

shop.mlb.com

I’m not usually into using something other than a team color to make a shirt more feminine, as I discussed here, but this one is just so adorable.  The pink makes sense, here.

San Francisco Giants Women’s “Get on Board” T-shirt

$21.99

shop.mlb.com

Aside from the giant faux-pas of using a font that is/resembles Curlz MT, which is almost as overused as Comic Sans (have I mentioned that I am a font geek?), I want this shirt now.  It’s unique and has a San Francisco flare which I love.

Ask Barry T-shirt

$35.4

zazzle.com

Back in the day, the story goes, Barry Zito and Barry Bonds had lockers next to each other and at Spring Training one year, they wore these t-shirts.  “Don’t Ask Me, Ask Barry” is a great way to answer people.  And an even better way to answer people is to, you know, point at your shirt.  So I want one.

Boelter San Francisco Giants Personalized Bowl

$39.99

a. I will not pay 39.99 for a bowl.  b. Does it come with pretzels?  c.  PERSONALIZED BOWL? Not cool, darling people.  Not cool.

Pangea Texas Rangers ProToast Toaster

$34.99

shop.mlb.com

How do they come up with these things?  And I’m taking votes: who thinks they made a piece of toast with the “T” on it and who they thinks they just Photoshopped it in?  And why do they sell a Rangers toaster and not a Giants one?  Do they think people in Texas eat more toast?  Or people in San Fran are all on non-wheat diets?

So who went shopping this Friday and did you find anything incredible?  And what’s on your holiday wish list this year?

Will report on Day Two in Snowflake Earrings.

p.s.  Apologies for the oddness in the font, bolds etc.  MLBlogs is being a little weird.  I will try to fix it again later.

Diamond Girl’s Retrospective of the 2010 Season

(Quickly… looking through the This Year in Baseball Awards and it’s so much fun to relive it all.  Armando Galarraga.  I’d forgotten about that, can you believe it?  Roy Oswalt in left.  Ichiro and a teenage girl being the ultimate Teenage Girl.  Dallas Braden’s perfect game.  So many fun moments.  Anyway.  Two quick things.  I’ll try to keep them quick.  First- I saw the Ryan Braun’s catch against the Giants on September 17th is one of the top plays.  To be honest, I’d forgotten all about that too but now I’m remembering what a fun day, a highlight of the 2010 season, it was for me.  And how perfect it was for Ryan to make that catch.  Needless to say, I held my “I Love U, Ryan Braun” sign high.  I’m also campaigning for Jon Daniels for Executive of the Year.  If any of you live in or spend time in Berkeley, you’ll know that someone named Josh Daniels was running for school board in the last election, so there were signs for him all over.  Couldn’t we, in true Bay Area sprit, recycle them and make them say, “Jon Daniels for Executive of the Year”?)

One week tomorrow since the Giants became World Series Champions and the 2010 season finished.  Time to do my retrospective.  This collage is my photo highlights of things I’ve written about and done relating to baseball this past season.  This collage is joined by three all-important items:  designer sunglasses, a hairbrush (heart-shaped, no less) and a baseball.

Collage2.jpg

March

Diamond Girl sees video of Zito at Spring Training talking about new socks.  She is puzzled.

Opening Day

Diamond Girl sees Zito’s socks.  She prays that she is hallucinating.

Later in April

Diamond Girl visits LA.  LA survives.  Barely.

May

Buster Posey sees ball and hits ball in debut.  World calls NY Times, but Diamond Girl does not.  She is getting a (non-Buster-Posey-themed) pedicure.

June

Diamond Girl gets picture of self with Barry Zito and aforementioned picture sets record for most comments on DG’s Facebook page.  80% female comments.

July

When the NL bullpen at the All-Star game goes from a Dodger to a Padre, Diamond Girl begins rooting for the AL.  (Some historians link this to her later switch of allegiances during the World Series.)

August

Brian Wilson grows beard.  Male portion of world grows beards, female portion wears fake beards.  Diamond Girl does not.  She is getting a (non-beard-themed) manicure.

September

Tim Lincecum cuts hair.  Diamond Girl calls the NY Times to give a tip on the sensational story but they don’t answer the phone.

Later in September

Diamond Girl luvs u, Ryan Braun.  Ryan Braun ignores.

October

Diamond Girl announces that she is rooting for the Rangers in the World Series.  World attempts to call NY Times but they have blocked World’s number, due to the volume of Buster Posey and Cody Ross related calls.

November

Giants win World Series.  World celebrates by setting fires and turning over police cars.  Diamond Girl celebrates by taking off nail polish, straightening hair and eating (non-baseball decorated) vanilla cupcakes.

Diamond Girl + World + San Francisco Giants + NY Times live happily ever after.

The End.
