Awkward Moments and Vicious Cycles Galore

In other news, I have just now come to the realization that the Giants won’t play another game (okay, yes, I’m slow) until next March.  And I am sad.  And, okay, yes, that probably has something to do with the Rangers losing today.   Some days I hate baseball a lot more than I like it.

And then I watch highlights like this one- Favorite. Baseball. Moment. Of. All. Time- and like it all over again.

Vicious cycle, people.  Vicious cycle.

My Letter to the Padres

Dear San Diego Padres,

Look.  I know we’ve had our differences.  I know I hated you with something of a burning passion last year- and, okay, much of this year- and I may have made one too many cracks about Jon Daniels vs. Jed Hoyer, but deep down we’re friends, right?  I mean, I hope so.  Because I have a teeny-tiny favor to ask of you.

You are going to be inhabiting Chase Field, the home of the much-feared Diamondbacks this evening and I, well, need you to beat them.

Pretty simple, really.  Just get a few hits, throw some nice pitches and come out with the W.

The reason I’m proposing this is that it’s really good for both of us.  My Giants get a chance to end today only 2 games back and you get a chance to be only, eh, 11 games back!  Win-win, I know.  You don’t need to tell me how smart I am.

Hey, if you want to just sweep ‘em, you could do that too!  Because, just between you and me, the Giants totally rained on my parade yesterday.  I was sniffing my fingers-which-smelled-like-lemons-due-to-my-making-of-lemon-bars and totally, 100% ready for a win and then they went and… lost.  Sometimes my optimism is hard to keep going.  Which is, of course, why I could use a little help from you.

Thankfully, the lemon bars were perfectly delicious.  So my day was not entirely ruined.

So do we have a deal, Pads?  What if I throw in a new name for your stadium?  (Because even you must admit that Petco Park is rather lame.)  I’m thinking something along the lines of Prada Park or Stadium of Marc Jacobs.  You know.

Love,

p.s.  Cole Hamels cannot walk the runway.  In case there was ever a question about that.

Why I Think AJ Preller is in Mongolia and Baby Giraffe Refers to a Viral Video of a Yawning Giraffe

I decided it was time to escape from the torture and I was missing my Texans terribly, so I snuck off to the O.Co Coliseum this morning and spent the day there.

It all started off very well, blow-out style, with the A’s walking in a run in the first and I was perfectly prepared to sit back and eat french fries that, yes, tasted a bit like gasoline. Then things got a li’l tense. Make that very tense. Eventually, the Rangers untied it in top of the 9th and after an iffy bottom, I went home with a heart rate slightly elevated and a 7-6 victory. They won and the Angels lost, which is the bottom line, but couldn’t they have just done it 10-0 or something, for this long-suffering San Fran’er?

I do have to the give the Rangers credit, though. They were the sweetest away team I’ve ever seen and I got an autograph from the former Best Hair in the MLB King, CJ Wilson (he might get that crown back, because now I’ve seen the hair up close) and their adorable pitching coach, Mike Maddux, the owner of a rather impressive mustache. Josh Hamilton also gave a bat away to a kid (the word is that he does that at every game) and signed for nearly 20 minutes, which is not exactly easy with the A’s dugouts. He was totally personable and nice to everyone. Love that guy.

The Maddux ‘Stache

I was secretly sneaking glances around, trying to spot AJ Preller (Rangers Senior Director, Player Personnel and former frat brother of Jon Daniels) but I figure he was probably on the Mongolian planes or something scouting around for awesome talent, not hanging in Oakland so I didn’t spot him. Better luck next time, when the appeal of throat singing has worn off, maybe.

Anyhow, I got home and saw a lot of things about a “Baby Giraffe”. At first I thought it was a viral video of a baby giraffe yawning or something (not irrational of me, there are loads) and then I realized that it actually had to do with one Brandon Belt. He, eh, hit two home runs. I don’t need to explain what that all means. Belt has been mismanaged this year no question, I think, but what’s done is done. I want to see way more out of him like that. The Giants are still very much in contention and if Brandon can help out with that, fabulous. I, for one, or maybe one million, am very glad he’s here. And glad to have a taken a series. (Taken a series! How foreign and fantastic that feels to type.)

And I finally got to test out a line I’ve waited a long time for. When the A’s mascot walked by, I was all, “Can somebody get this walking carpet out of my way?” Just, you know, channeling my inner Princess Leia.

p.s. When Alexi Ogando walked by, I nearly fainted. And when Mike Adams walked by? My mind screamed, “Giant killer!”. But my face just smiled politely, in case you were wondering.

In Which I Go All J-Sanch and Predict a Sweep

The photo puts me in a ridiculously good mood.  I am going to go all J-Sanch now and say we are so going to sweep Philly.

Whether that has more to do with the above photo, these brilliant little interviews with Jon Daniels (I wasn’t imagaining the Jed-Jon rivalry!) and Ryan Braun (it’s true!  They asked him to be on The Bachelor!) on MLB Intentional Talk or the Giants real-live baseball skills, you can decide for yourself.

But I certainly am confident.  And confidence is key.  Even Willy Wonka knows that.

And now that I’ve given you enough video links to keep you going until the livestream of batting practice at 4:45 (who came up with that?  Sorry, but it’s way past boring.) I’ll just leave you with one message: may the force be with you.  And Jeremy.  And the World Series trophy.

Why Barry Is Like An Ice Cream Cone in the Sun, Blonde JD and Other Assorted Second Halfness

Well… so… mini-blowouts, blowouts and tight games.  We’ve gotten some pretty good entertainment this weekend.

July 15th, 2011.  In the scheme of blowouts, Giants vs. Padres game ranked with some of the best.  If you’re looking at the 6-1 final score and wondering what’s up with me, then just believe me when I say that felt like a blowout/offensive explosion, overall nice game.  We could call it a mini-blowout.

July 16th, 2011?  That’s maybe a more classic blowout, featuring a Padres win, a 11-3 final score and a Zito meltdown of vaguely epic proportions.  Painful doesn’t cut it.  I mean, I would say that one blowout deserves another, except if that was going to happen, couldn’t we have at least scored a nice round 10 runs or something, before we gave it right back?

And then July 17th, 2011.  Let’s just say the two teams together left 18 runners on and neither got even one extra base hit.  It was a nail-biter and the Giants won 4-3 in the 11th with a suicide squeeze.  That kind of game.

I think whether or not you’re a Zito fan like me, his start has to be disappointing and the one real downer of the series.  It has so felt like he might be getting something good going.  I said his third start back from the disabled list would be the catalyst, but I was wrong.  This is what everyone’s going to remember.

Let me give you my favorite Zito analogy.

Zito when he’s doing well is a chocolate ice cream cone.

But when he goes… he goes fast.  Like an ice cream cone in the sun.

Let’s do a little brightsideness!  The offense has looked encouraging.  While Pablo’s hit streak ended on Friday, he got it right back going, Tejada has looked- dare I say it?- okay, actually and Fontenot’s been a total sparkplug.  Even Aubrey’s gotten a few hits.  You have to get those sad games like Saturday’s out of the way and the Giants just took three out of four from San Diego.  That feels absolutely magic to say.  Not to mention that Matt came out victorious in the Matt vs. Mat matchup.  Small pleasures, you know?

And don’t look now but he Rangers are on an, eh, 11 game winning streak.  Say that aloud for good measure, okay?  I am excited about this because a) that that means they have an identical record to the Giants (World Series re-match, anyone?) and b) I have a sneaking suspicion/dream that Jon Daniels will die his hair blonde again.  And make pictures available to the media.  In the meantime, this will have to do.
