His Name is Bonds. Barry Bonds. And Guess Who Looks Pretty Darn Cool in the Desperate Ballplayers of San Fran Trailer?

(Please send your healing thoughts Eugenio Velez’s way.  A friend who is a Dodger fan- yep, I consort with Dodger fans, on occasion- alerted me about his injury today.  Hope it’s not as bad as it initially looks.)

I always think of Bonds as “the other Barry”.  I guess that was Zito’s title, but I’ve always been a Zito fan and never been a Bonds fan.  And I find this trial really, really fascinating.   I’m not much of a legal buff myself but I’ve found myself following this all closely.

FAQ about the trial:

*Is Anderson being paid off?

*Bonds didn’t know he was using steroids?

*HGH isn’t a steroid at all?

*Was that you (Diamond Girl) who arrived late to the jury carrying a Victoria’s Secret bag?

I can only answer the last one and the answer is no.  I am not serving on the jury.  I am not, actually, old enough to serve on a jury.  Even if I were, I am really anything but impartial.  In addition to which I do not shop at VS.  So no, it wasn’t me.

And my answer, which is by no means backed up by anything, to the question about him knowing or not knowing is: there are lies, damn lies and fiction.  That line is courtesy of journalist/writer/professor/connoisseur of strange news Adam Peneberg who is basically a rock star in my mind.  Read Viral Loop.  And subscribe to Fast Company (he’s a staff writer for them).  And hey, if you have the SAT score and the money, go to NYU.  He’s brilliant.

Everyone’s been slamming Tejada these past few days about his marginal spring.  I obviously haven’t seen him play, but I am guessing we should get used to it.  I don’t think he’ll be terrible, this year, but I don’t think he’ll contribute a whole lot.  He’s too normal.  Which sound terrible, but it’s the truth.  He was just a middle-of-the-road free agent and the Giants team is basically Wack Land.  I just don’t think Tejada was a good fit, playing-wise(it’s not like his play has surprised anyone this spring, really) or clubhouse-wise.

That said, I don’t think it’ll stop the Giants from competing (not gonna say winning, people, so give up on that hope) in 2011.  The pitchers might just want to work on pitching the strikeout/fly ball/groundout-to-anything-other-than-short.  Not too hard, right?

p.s.  I saw the first trailer for the Desperate Ballplayers of San Fran (actually named “The Franchise”.  Lame.) today and I have just two things to say:

a.  Is that all Pat Burrell can do?  Drink water/beer/unidentified substance while obviously thinking he looks very cool?

b.  Barry looks cool.  Really cool.  The hair is fascinating.  What else is new?

I Am Really Mad at Gameday Right Now.

I am really mad at Gameday right now.

They had the nerve to tell me that Eugenio Velez hit a home run when he came up in the ninth inning for the Dodgers against the Giants and therefore created a complex mental quandary for me.  In the end, I cheered.  Only to be told that Gameday was mistaken and it was not, in fact, Velez who hit the home run.  It was Xavier Paul.

Are you kidding me?

They look nothing alike.  Maybe the people who do Gameday need glasses.  I read this weird article in Teen Vogue with the headline “These frames will have girls everywhere wishing they’d fail their eye exams!”  Yeah.  It was weird.  But I do have some glasses suggestions for them if they do indeed fail the eye exam that should be required after this inexcusable mistake.

Okay.

Rant done.

Velez does look better in blue, I have to admit though.  It suits his complexion.

Judge for yourself.

Now I’m getting nostalgic about him.  Remember his walk-off grand slam in the 12th for the Grizzlies?  Watch it here.  Goosebumps.

Better end this post sooner rather than later.  Hats off to Ichiro for making a bigger donation than Sandra Bullock.  That’s class, right there.

‘Cause it’s February, the 22nd and I’m hugging Dodgers…

…and I can’t tell a lie.

I have watched Holiday Inn way (and I mean way, way) too many times so as soon as I looked at a calendar and saw it was February the 22nd that song got stuck in my head.

The Giants Spring Training season kicks off on Friday and I’m not gonna lie:  I am counting the minutes.  Well, days.  But almost minutes.  I am, once again, not gonna lie:  I would prefer to be in the Grapefruit League.  The Grapefruit League brings to mind a sort of comic book world with eternal spring and around the clock baseball.  The Cactus League just brings rather unpleasant memories of cactus that grows a little too far onto the sidewalk.  The rest is unfortunate history.

I would also like to say that my heart breaks a little every time I see something about Juan Uribe in Dodger Blue.   The Merc was kind enough to make an entire photo slideshow of said object.  That was sort of rough.  One picture is, you know, plenty.

Uribe is an example of someone who totally has a personality without freaky beards or black masks or anything like that.  Oooo-ribe was wonderful while it lasted.  He will be missed.

I’ve almost filled up my Talking About Dodgers quota so I’ll go fast with this… don’t you dare make a joke about Eugenio Velez missing his flight and missing that ball.  You know the one.  I was there and it was wet.  And he had just gotten hit in the head, which tends to be omitted from the history books.  Velez is a good defensive outfielder and he tries 110% all the time.  Which is, of course, part of his problem but you can’t say he doesn’t try.  And that play is utterly understandable and missing a plane flight is no fun at all.  Hugs to him too.

I need to sign off before I hug any more Dodgers.  Happy February the 22nd.  Treat yourself to a little Fred Astaire.  And a little more.

Peace and Love and Antlers to All + My Resolutions for 2011

Peace and love and antlers to all!

I am purging 2010 (though seriously, what is there to purge?  The Giants and the Rangers played each other in the World Series) by redoing my nail polish.  Even so, I love New Year’s Eve and am pumped for 2011.  It’s going to be very good.  Armando Galarraga will do fantastically along with Eugenio Velez (he’ll do well, but the Dodgers won’t, of course) and Joe Martinez, who will be signed by the Rangers before the offseason ends.  ::Diamond Girl gives Jon Daniels a very pointed look::  The Niners may also hire me as their GM (okay, yes, that’s unlikely).  Bud Selig will decide to do important things like make the wild card wild and rename the Winter Meetings (this year from December 6th-9th) because everyone knows winter begins on December 21st.  The world will get over their Glee complex and watch baseball instead.  And the world will accept the antlers as the truth of all creation and wear them all year round.

I’m not really into New Year resolutions, but I’m going to try it this year.

1.  I resolve to visit my grandparents in Los Angeles without fighting over whether Wilson or Broxton is a better closer.

2.  I resolve to dissolve my life savings and go to Citi Field or Yankee Stadium.

3.  I resolve to carry a sign to an A’s vs. Rangers game and get the object of my sign to autograph it.

4.  I resolve to crash the 2011 GM Meetings.

5.  I resolve to repeat my feat of walking over every inch of AT&T Park in stilettos.

Okay.  I now have plenty to do next year.  Soon it’ll be time (It’s Time!) to settle in for a night of delayed Times Square.  Happy New Year everyone.   Hugs and cupcakes and aviator Prada sunglasses to all in the coming year.  2011′s gonna rule.

Diamond Girl

p.s.  2010 was my first year at this- blogging- and so I want to thank you all again for reading and commenting.  71 entries.  A lot of talk about Ryan Braun.  I dig the world.

Baseball is a Business. Rinse and Repeat. 2.0

We are rinsing and repeating today because Eugenio Velez signed a minor league contract with the Dodgers.  As I said before, I am hoping he will get more play time and a legitimate chance, which the Giants just aren’t able to offer him right now.  I wish he wasn’t going to be donning Dodger blue, but if he takes a little play time from Matt Kemp I won’t be at all adverse to that.  There is a bright side to everything.

shampooing hair2.jpg

Meanwhile Cliffy is said to have signed a deal with the Phillies.  As of this writing, the number of years and amount of money is not confirmed, though “sources” say it’s five years, $100 million.  So he wasn’t going after that endlessly long contract after all.  Interesting and refreshing.   I’ll write more when I know more but for now I just have one other refreshing thing to share:  yesterday, I mentioned Cliff Lee and the person I was talking to said, “Cliff who?”  Some days- especially media circus days- I just love those non baseball fans.  And yeah.  This all surprised me too.

Brian Cashman/Hank Steinbrenner/Jon Daniels/Nolan Ryan/Chuck Greenberg will probably sleep better tonight, now that it’s all over.  As well as Cliff himself.  I think everyone involved in this is glad it’s over.

Good night, blogsphere.
